ABOUT US

The Program

This programme is designed to provide both professional and academic training about journalism to people from a wide variety of background. Students graduating from universities not majoring in journalism and communication who nonetheless are interested in a career in journalism could learn the basic techniques and knowledge in the field. Working journalists and/or professionals from other occupations who need to deal with the media could benefit from the intellectual training so as to deepen their understanding of journalism.

Message from the Director

Welcome to the MA in Journalism programme at The Chinese University of Hong Kong!

In an era saturated with information from countless sources, the role of journalism might appear uncertain, even precarious. Yet, it is precisely within this complex information landscape that the need for reliable, verified, and ethically produced information becomes paramount. As long as individuals and societies rely on trustworthy information to make informed decisions – about our lives, our communities, and our world – journalism will remain not just relevant, but essential.

While the traditional image of a journalist working within the confines of established media institutions may be evolving, the core values of the profession – truth-seeking, accuracy, fairness, and accountability – remain as relevant as ever. Today, alongside established media, we see a new generation of content creators, independent journalists, and innovative start-ups stepping up to fulfill this crucial role, experimenting with new formats and platforms to reach diverse audiences.

At CUHK, we are dedicated to preparing our students to thrive in this dynamic and challenging environment. Our programme goes beyond simply equipping students with the technical skills of the trade. We foster critical thinking, ethical decision-making, and a deep understanding of the ever-evolving media ecosystem. We encourage experimentation, embrace innovation, and explore new frontiers in information collection, storytelling, and content dissemination.

At the same time, our commitment to the fundamental principles of journalism – to truth, accuracy, and serving the public interest – remains unwavering. We believe in the power of journalism to hold power to account, give voice to the marginalized, and provide the public with the information they need to be engaged citizens.

We invite you to explore our carefully-designed programme, connect with our experienced faculty, listen to the stories of our alumni, and join us in shaping the future of journalism in Hong Kong, the region, and beyond.
