Programme Specific Questions
Q1. Will the classes be taught in English, Putonghua or Cantonese?
All required courses except the Chinese News Writing and Reporting classes are taught in English, whereas elective courses are taught in English, Cantonese and Putonghua. Students who do not understand Cantonese can complete the program through taking the English News Writing and Reporting classes and the English-language elective courses. But understanding of spoken Cantonese would be much preferred and could broaden the choices of electives. For students who want to take the Chinese News Writing and Reporting classes, understanding of spoken Cantonese is required.
Q2. What are the programme characteristics of Journalism?
This programme is designed to provide both professional and academic training about journalism to people from a wide variety of background. We have flexible curriculum for both students with or without journalism training or working experience. Students graduating from universities not majoring in journalism and communication who nonetheless are interested in a career in journalism could learn the basic techniques and knowledge in the field. Working journalists who need to deal with the media could also benefit from the intellectual training so as to deepen their understanding of journalism.
Q3. What is the Scholarship for Hong Kong Practicing Journalists? What is the definition of “local applicant”? What is the procedure to apply for the scholarships? What criteria is used to determine if an applicant receives the scholarships?
Local students who are admitted to the programme with a minimum of 2-year journalism-related experience are eligible to apply for the Scholarship for Hong Kong Practicing Journalists.They should demonstrate good potential in journalistic works and willing to continue serving in the local journalism industry after graduation. Three awards with HK$60,000 each are available each year.
a) Only local students would be eligible for the scholarships. The applicants would be considered a non-local student if he/she is a holder of the following documents issued by the Immigration Department of the HKSAR:
- Student visa/entry permit; or
- Visa/entry permit under the Immigration Arrangement for Non-local Graduates; or
- Dependant visa/entry permit who were 18 years old or above when he/she was issued with such visa/entry permit by the Director of Immigration.
b) Local students accepted into the programme will be invited to provide a letter of intent, a portfolio of previous Journalistic works. Successful awardees will be notified before they submit the admission deposit.
c) The award of the Scholarships will take into account the students’ academic achievements, professional qualifications, relevant working experience and achievements in journalism areas as well as the letter of intent submitted by the students with special attention to their personal statement on how they can contribute to local journalism industry after completing the programme.
