poverty. Behind the glamour of its economic success, nearly one fifth of its 7.3 million people are struggling to have the basic needs in life. While poverty it a global issue, this is a story of how volunteers take action to offer help. Restaurant owner &#8220;Ming Gor&#8221; took the center stage amid claims that the government is not doing enough to address the persisting problem. The severity of the problem was reflected by interviews with people concerned. More important, the story focused on a crusader who began handling out foods to the under-privileged in poor Sham Shui Po area more than a decade ago. &#8220;Ming Gor&#8221;, who runs a restaurant with a Chinese name seemingly means &#8220;You are not alone in this area&#8221;, has become a popular figure. Government efforts to deal with the problem is branded as evasive. Ms. Trada Yip lost her eyesight when she was a teenager because of glaucoma. Due to the lack of guide dogs, she flew to New York and got one. Rally had become her closest companion ever since, so much so she would call it a mother and daughter relationship. The story also reflects the support needed for the visually-impaired people. There are more than 1700 applicants seeking for guide dogs, with only about forty in service. There is solid evidence by now that cigarette smoking causes lung cancer. Even more, research has highlighted the interconnection between cigarette smoking and breast cancer. Some scholars believe the services help increase the success rate while some private companies and long-time smokers argue that the smokers&#8217; own will and determination are overlooked in the government policies.
