It explores the consequences and implications of globalization on media, culture, and society. Key theoretical texts will be read on a par with more empirically inspired texts, encouraging students to connect complex debates with concrete cultural imaginations and the objects and practices they generate.<\/p>\n<p><strong>COMM 5520 Applied Communication Research<\/strong><br \/><em><span data-olk-copy-source=\"MessageBody\">3 units<\/span><\/em><br \/>Introduction to qualitative and quantitative communication research, including ways of collecting data materials and analysis. (not for Ph.D. and M.Phil. students)<\/p>\n<p><strong>COMM 5710 Seminar in Communication Theories<\/strong><br \/><em><span data-olk-copy-source=\"MessageBody\">3 units<\/span><\/em><br \/>This course introduces students to a range of theoretical perspectives in Communication Studies related to diverse aspects of globalization processes and current debates on communication, culture, politics, and the digital. We will explore some main paradigms of theorizing and the question of whether and how communication theory is socioculturally situated. The course focuses on theories of human communication which includes embodied as well as digital practices. Students have ample opportunities to apply their theoretical knowledge to case studies, analyze and reflect on their own social interaction patterns, discourses of dominance and marginalization, the role of the digital in their social worlds, and explain communication phenomena in different locales.<\/p>\n<p><strong>COMM 5711 Reframing Narrative of the Global<\/strong><br \/><em><span data-olk-copy-source=\"MessageBody\">3 units<\/span><\/em><br \/>The global is a contested, evolving category that shapes how we understand ourselves, the world, and our futures. Its concept and lived experience diverge, demanding a critical vocabulary to see how it is mobilized, weaponized, and redefined amid poly-crises. Globalization is uneven, fragmented, and entangled with the local, marked by geopolitical and technological tensions. With the rise of planetary frameworks\u2014climate justice, post-anthropocene thinking, more-than-human worlds\u2014grappling with \u201cthe global\u201d is urgent. This course explores eight dimensions of globalization, examining its metaphors, resistances, and underbellies to imagine sustainable, collective, and inclusive global narratives while fostering the capacity to critically engage and reframe them.<\/p>\n<h3>Elective Course<\/h3>\n<p><strong>COMM 5110, 5111 Topical Studies in Communication I, II<\/strong><br \/><em>3 units each<\/em><br \/>Students focus on one particular topic and work on it under the supervision of a professor\/instructor.<\/p>\n<p><strong>COMM 5510 Media Management<\/strong><br \/><em><span data-olk-copy-source=\"MessageBody\">3 units<\/span><\/em><br \/>This course aims at acquainting students with general management principles, concepts, and theories, with particular emphasis on their applications in media organizations in a commercial, competitive, and rapidly changing environment. The focus is on training future media managers\u2019 problem-solving and decision-making skills. The communications industries covered will include the print media, radio, broadcast, cable television, advertising and public relations. The students will learn through a combination of lectures, seminars, and case studies.<\/p>\n<p><strong>COMM 5530 Crisis Management<\/strong><br \/><em><span data-olk-copy-source=\"MessageBody\">3 units<\/span><\/em><br \/>This course is designed to help students familiarize themselves with the theories and practice of crisis communication. They will learn how professional public relations practitioners help their clients in everyday situations to reduce risk, get prepared, respond to and recover from crises. Students are required to devise and evaluate their own crisis simulation exercises in class. The experience will prepare students for real life crisis communication-related assignments.<\/p>\n<p><strong>COMM 5590 Culture and Communication<\/strong><br \/><em><span data-olk-copy-source=\"MessageBody\">3 units<\/span><br \/><\/em>Culture drives social, political, and technological change. Alive and malleable, it constantly shifts with new forces, contexts, and contestations shaping everyday life. Culture and Communication approaches culture on two axes: first, what constitutes culture and how it shapes meaning and communication; second, how global crises and transformations redefine culture itself. Students examine cultural objects, practices, and phenomena\u2014from viral trends and cinema to AI-generated media\u2014to understand lived experiences and the politics of cultural regulation, including censorship, misinformation, and manipulation. The course foregrounds marginalized perspectives to foster ethical, responsible, and sensitive approaches to difference, dissonance, and intercultural exchange.<\/p>\n<p><strong>COMM 5636 Beat Reporting in Technology, Health and Environment<\/strong><br \/><em><span data-olk-copy-source=\"MessageBody\">3 units<\/span><br \/><\/em>This course offers a unique opportunity to delve into the emerging beats that are paramount to society\u2019s well-being: technology, health and environment. It will cover a wide range of topics, from artificial intelligence to cybersecurity, from medical breakthroughs to public health policies, and from climate change to environmental justice. The course will be divided into three modules on the three beats and taught by experienced journalists.<\/p>\n<p><strong>COMM 5649 Analyzing Public Affairs <\/strong><br \/><em><span data-olk-copy-source=\"MessageBody\">3 units<\/span><\/em><br \/>Basic and background knowledge about a society\u2019s political, economic, and social systems are essential for journalists working on public affairs. This class aims at equipping students with such basic background knowledge and strengthening students\u2019 capabilities in studying public affairs and policies. The class introduces students to fundamental concepts regarding the set up of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region \u2013 its government, its legal system, its economy, etc. It also discusses a few specific \u201chot\u201d policy issues.<\/p>\n<p><strong>COMM 5723 Public Relations and Globalization <\/strong><br \/><em><span data-olk-copy-source=\"MessageBody\">3 units<\/span><\/em><br \/>This course addresses the topic of public relations in a globalized world. It helps students analyze various current affairs topics, social and cultural issues and their relations with local and global business operations, and it requires frequent practical application of the learned materials.<\/p>\n<p><strong>COMM 5725 Multistakeholder Decision Making and Media Practice<\/strong><br \/><em><span data-olk-copy-source=\"MessageBody\">3 units<\/span><\/em><br \/>The course responds to the multistakeholder ecosystem, with human, more than human, machines, systems, institutions, and organisational stakeholders who engage in decision making around critical social and political questions. It introduces students to multistakeholderism as a concept, and engaging with how different actors within the ecosystem need to be identified, approached, and negotiated with, to see the complexity of global decision making practices.<\/p>\n<p><strong>COMM 5735 New Media and Society <\/strong><br \/><em><span data-olk-copy-source=\"MessageBody\">3 units<\/span><\/em><br \/>The course provides an introduction to and analysis of emerging communication technologies, the Internet, multimedia technologies, and new media, including some basic technical descriptions, trends, history, diffusion, applications, and their social, economic, political and cultural implications. Topics include electronic government, online crimes, addiction, digital divide and online communities, etc.<\/p>\n<p><strong>COMM 5771, 5772, 5773 Topical Studies in Global Communication I, II. III<\/strong><br \/><em>3 units each<\/em><br \/>The instructor will direct the study of a topic in Global Communication he or she specializies in. Students are allowed to take the above-listed Topical Studies courses for more than once, and gain the units each time they pass the course. However, students cannot take courses with the same course code more than once in a single term.<\/p>\n<p><strong>COMM 5775 Cultures in Media<\/strong><br \/><em><span data-olk-copy-source=\"MessageBody\">3 units<\/span><\/em><br \/>This course analyzes intercultural communication and postcolonial media cultures. It explores the ways in which different media can facilitate cultural expression and intercultural exchange or gave way to contestation and conflict. It examines the agency and responsibility of media makers, institutions, and platforms.<\/p>\n<p><strong>COMM 5838 Mastering Digital Media Content<\/strong><br \/><em><span data-olk-copy-source=\"MessageBody\">3 units<\/span><\/em><br \/>This course examines the latest trends of content making of marketing communications in digital and social space. Students will gain an in-depth knowledge of how to develop, explore, and appreciate different creative techniques, while crafting creative content for effective communication.<\/p>\n<p><strong>COMM 5947 Data Science and AI in New Media<\/strong><br \/><em><span data-olk-copy-source=\"MessageBody\">3 units<\/span><\/em><br \/>This course is designed for students pursuing strategic roles in the new media industry, equipping them to apply data and AI strategies to real-world challenges. Bridging the gap between strategic vision and technical execution, it delivers essential data science concepts and practical processes for effective collaboration with data teams on projects that drive measurable business impact. Emphasizing strategic problem-solving and ethical data and AI practices, the course uses case-based learning to build multidisciplinary capabilities in strategy, analytics, data visualization, modeling, and machine learning. Students also explore the latest AI developments, preparing them to address complex challenges and leverage emerging opportunities.<\/p>\n<p><strong>COMM 5992 Critical Data Studies<\/strong><br \/><em><span data-olk-copy-source=\"MessageBody\">3 units<\/span><br \/><\/em>This course introduces key theoretical perspectives and social controversies related to data-driven, algorithmic, and AI technologies through the lens of Critical Data Studies. Through conceptual applications and real-world case studies, it helps students critically examine the socio-political implications of how emerging data-driven and AI technologies are designed, institutionalized, governed, and contested across different social and cultural contexts.<\/p>\n<p><strong>COMM 6120, 6121 Topical Studies in Communication III, IV<\/strong><br \/><em>3 units each<\/em><br \/>Students focus on one particular topic of interest under the supervision of a professor\/lecturer.<\/p>\n<p><strong>COMM 6420 Strategies for Integrated Communication Campaigns<\/strong><br \/><em><span data-olk-copy-source=\"MessageBody\">3 units<\/span><\/em><br \/>This course covers concepts and theories of social change, attitude change, diffusion of innovation, development and underdevelopment, and modernization. Students will be trained to do research in these areas and be able to apply communication theories and research methods in designing, executing and evaluating specific campaigns.<\/p>\n<p><strong>COMM 6900 Graduation Project<\/strong><br \/><em>3 units<\/em><br \/>Students are required to complete a Graduation Project on an approved topic under supervision of a faculty member.
