Being part of CUHK M.A Global Communication master was an incredible opportunity and the fulfillment of a long-standing dream to study in Asia in an international city. As a student I not only learned about communication in many diverse aspects but also met, and got to deeply like, my great classmates and teachers. They were all caring and helping me settling in this new city. Coming from France, this one-year program enlarged my understanding of Hong Kong and Asia while also providing me with theoretical frameworks to relate what I see and wonder at with historical and philosophical thinking. Looking back on our assignments and projects, with my classmates we achieved tight deadlines while always being encouraged and supported by our teachers and in the end we could be happy about our performances under their guidance. This experience also gave me confidence to stay in Hong Kong for the foreseeable future to look for an employment here and to keep discovering this fascinating place!

The experience of attending the MA in Global Communication programme has been challenging, but also extremely fulfilling. A wide range of high quality courses are offered to students, allowing for a great amount of customization when it comes to the structure and content of one’s education. Whether your goal is to use this programme as a starting point of your journey into the field of academia, or to gain more practical knowledge necessary for success in the increasingly globalizing professional field, you will most likely find what you are looking for. The classes themselves aim to explore a variety of issues and debates, framing them in the larger context of a globalizing world, while also paying attention to local issues. While many case studies focus on events happening in China and other parts of South East Asia, the concepts and theories investigated are applicable in a variety of different contexts. On top of that, many pathways for development of practical skills – such as media and news production – are available as electives.

For me personally, the programme provided an opportunity to delve deeper into the issues I had engaged with during my previous studies, and greatly assisted in determining my next step. When I arrived in Hong Kong I knew little about my future, only that I wanted to stay in the region. The MA in Global Communication offers the tools, the contacts, and the support necessary to explore one’s options. The combination of the insightful teaching staff, the regularly organized lectures by guest speakers from top global universities, and the extremely helpful administrative personnel, constitutes a rich, invigorating and (mostly) stress-free learning environment. In this environment I was able to pursue my goals, explore new ideas, and take first step into the world of academia.

Finally, studying at The Chinese University of Hong Kong means living in one of the world’s most vibrant cities. In the relatively small area of Hong Kong, one can easily access a great plethora of thrilling and serene experiences, from the relative calm of the green campus and the New Territories, to the bustling intensity of Kowloon and the Hong Kong island itself. My advice to any incoming students is to take some time to explore and engage not only with the university (both socially and academically), but with the city itself. After all, if one’s goal is to study globalization, Hong Kong serves as a wonderful case study.

I would definitely say studying M.A in Global Communication at CUHK was meaningful and full of achievements. This program not only allowed me to learn theoretical knowledge in globalization and communication but also to enhance practical skills of communication practices in technologies and PR industries. Most importantly, this program gave me a valuable opportunity to learn about myself through various theories. From my experience, I was able reflect my life and became clear about my nationality and identity as a “Third Culture Kid.” Then I had a “light bulb moment” about why I always felt a lack of belonging and a loss of personal identity while living in China even though I was trilingual and adaptable to international environments. In addition, there are so many aspects of communication phenomena and social worlds I realized and learned through courses, which truly widened my world view and reflected values. Overall, as a GC student, I became more aware of global phenomena and concerned about related issues.I also became more confident than I was before.

The program was designed in a professional and comprehensive manner so that I could understand the concepts despite the fact that my undergraduate major was in a different field. Thus I would recommend this course to anyone from any background who would like to develop theoretical knowledge of global issues and practical insights of communication at the same time. Lastly, I would like to express my sincere gratitude to professors and classmates for their warm support in this year.

When I first moved to HK in August 2016, I was completely shocked with everything around me – this was my first time in Asia region and first time to move so far away from home.

Several things happened straight away as I just moved to my new apartment which I was completely not ready for – living in a shared flat, no need for cooking, and a fish which flew in my face as I was moving in. My flatmates were nice and smiley, it felt comfortable to stay long hot evenings together as we prepared dinner and had a sip of wine.

My new uni life was groundbreaking as I was the only European in the whole Masters specs. It was vital to get to know folks. around and it relatively easy I found It was relatively easy to find people to spend weekends with and having fun while planning the presentations. Undoubtedly, this study journey is one of the best I ever had.

So what’s next? I’m a marketing manager in a small Hong Kong company, being totally happy with the opportunities CUHK opened for me and my friends – it truly did prepare me for the local curiosities and ensured me once again in the unconditional love I got for HK. Living here is extremely comfortable, and I am not planning to move or come back home in the near future.

Coming to CUHK was a dream of mine for years. There are very few programs in the world that combine communication, media, international and intercultural studies in the comprehensive way of CUHK’s M.A. in Global Communication program. I feel the GC program’s diversity and professionalism has prepared me to re-enter the ever globalizing workforce or to go into higher research-based degree programs. During my first term in the GC program, I had a family emergency back in the U.S. that left me feeling stressed because I was so far from home. The professors and staff at CUHK were an amazing support system as I worked to balance the stress with school life. I have made so many friends and developed great relationships with my professors. This is an encouraging environment to challenge yourself to grow as both a student and a person. I feel extremely blessed to have had the opportunity to fulfill my dream of studying at CUHK.

As an international student from Moscow, Russia, I have encountered a whole new world by studying in the M.A. in Global Communication program at CUHK. All of the professors are great and each of them has a unique teaching style. They really do keep you busy but in a fun and exciting way. The GC program is based on a combination of theory and practice. There are individual assignments and group projects that sometimes require a little extra effort. I would recommend this program to those who do not have any professional experience and have not made their career decisions yet. And yes, Hong Kong is awesome!

Simply speaking, the M.A. program in Global Communication has provided many opportunities for me to explore the world. The courses are designed comprehensively and have enabled me to gain a global perspective, from Asia to Africa, from more developed countries to ethnic minorities. I was taught and trained to look at things from many theoretical and practical angles. Also, as the only Hong Kong local student in my class, attending lessons and communicating with my classmates was an exciting “transnational” experience for me. We were not only learning global issues through lessons, but also experiencing a global atmosphere in the classes. I’m so glad having had the chance being a member of this program.
